I missed last week's Hop, being out and about all weekend. This weekend I should actually have time to visit other blogs and find out if you all judge books by their covers or not.
I would love to be able to puff out my chest a bit and declare that I would never in a million years judge a book by its cover. Haven't we been instructed from childhood to never do such a thing? But I can not. I have a continual struggle in this area...I know I'm not supposed to, but I end up doing it before I even realize it has been done. It's like waking up in the morning and realizing you forgot to take your make-up off the night before. Oops. (did I just admit to that?) Some covers just don't compare to others, and as the outside of a book is your first encounter with what lies inside, I can't help but tie them together.
I agree with you completely, Melody. I'm partial to the vintage-looking covers in your post. I just stopped by from the hop but will definitely visit again soon.
ReplyDeleteI think every one would like to think they don't judge a book by it's cover but everyone does. We can't help but be drawn to visually appealing things--the publishers trick is to figure out what will be visually appealing to the most people.
ReplyDeleteHi Melody. Hope you have a fun weekend. I am not sure why the cover doesn't really make a difference to me. Unless I guess it's horrific. I don't actually even really look at the cover in detail until after I read the book, and only if I really like it.
ReplyDeleteHi visiting from the HOP and a new follower. I love the cover illustrations you provided for us! You might be interested in The Newbery Project blog. I have been trying to get them all read, but I am behind on reviews.
ReplyDeleteI would love for you to say Happy Birthday to my daughter who just started a blog - today on her birthday...
Outpourings Of A Soul.
I hope you will have time to visit one or both of my blogs: LibrarysCat and Never Forget !!
Have a great weekend!
Donna--aren't those covers pretty? I had to find an excuse to post pictures of them! :)
ReplyDeleteLisa--I think I try not to judge a book by its cover because I realize that the cover art falls under marketing, not necessarily fully representative of the content...but it's so hard!
BookQuoter--I think I am a pretty visual person, so the covers really grab my attention and say a lot to me. This is also, I think, why I'm so susceptible to impulse buys in book stores.
Library Cat--You are the second person to mention The Newbery Project to me, I really need to stop slacking and check it out!
They are def charming!
