Finders Keepers

New books for me, new books for you...I'm doing some shopping and some purging, how much fun is that?

Mine:
I allowed myself into a bookstore this week, on the pretense that I needed to do some Christmas shopping...and I did buy a couple of things for my Secret Santa exchange people...but I found even more exciting things for my own shelves.  As a side note, I love how my Indie Book Shop has separated Literary Fiction from other Adult Fiction, although it caught me off guard how many times I found myself internally scoffing and sending hate vibes at certain titles.  The Alchemist? Gah! *rolls eyes*  Despite my protestations, I came home with 7 new treasures:

1. The Road (will be reading this for my Back to Classics Challenge in 2011)
2. The Faulkner Reader (A review on Tinkers made me think I might like Faulkner.  We shall find out.)
3. Snow (I've already read this, but passed it on...needed it back on my shelf.)
4. Anna Karenina (I've read this already as well, but it was ages ago and I didn't have my own copy.)
5. Slaughterhouse Five (Literary Science Fiction?  If anything can make me appreciate SF, this might be it.)
6. The Elephant Vanishes (I'm hoping that I'll find something in here to foist onto the guys in my house)
7. Angle of Repose (Stegner's name has popped up a few times lately, and as this one's a Pulitzer, I figured I'd be buying it sooner or later anyhow.)

Yours:
These books are either ARCs that I'm ready to pass on, or titles that I'm replacing with a prettier copy.  All are in very good condition.  Do you want one?  Leave me a comment and it's yours, (first come, first serve, US only because of cost--sorry!) available for the next week or so...when I'll find somewhere else for them to go.

1. The Day the Falls Stood Still by Cathy Buchanan (ARC, novel centered around the history of Niagara Falls)
2. Dubliners by James Joyce (Inexpensive Dover Thrift copy, bottom edge wasn't cut very well, but otherwise pretty much perfect.)
3. My Antonia by Willa Cather (Barnes and Noble edition)
4. Star of the Sea by Joseph O'Connor (LOVED this book...will definitely find someone to pass it on to if you guys don't want it.)
5. Anne Bradstreet by D.B. Kellogg (short biography on this Puritan poet's life.)
6. Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe
7. Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie
8. The Troll Garden by Willa Cather (Cather's 2nd published work; a collection of short stories.)

  2. Oh my goodness...if nobody wants the Troll Garden, I would love it. I adored My Antonia in college and would dig reading her short stories.

(And also, I'm trying to get enough courage to read Anna Karrina).

Heh, and spell it correctly even.

  3. I'd love Star of The Sea if you're willing to send it to me. I notice that you're reading Snow by Orham Pamuk, or you bought it anyway; I loved that novel. I'm currently reading his newest novel The Museum of Innocence which I strongly suspect will be my favorite read of 2010. Nothing like the last minute, eh? :)

  4. I would love the copy of Dubliners if no one else is interested - my grandma took me to a musical production of The Dead when I was very little and I have always wanted to read more of the stories.

  5. I'm also planning to read Anna Karenina & Slaughterhouse-Five this year, both for the Back to the Classics Challenge. Faulkner is an author I'm bound & determined to read some day...*sigh*

  6. You got some great loot! I'm also gearing up for the classics challenge. So excited! I was thinking of reading Slaughter House Five for the war section, but I'm pretty sure it's a fictional war so I'm not sure that works. Otherwise I may go with The Things They Carried.

  8. Bailey--It's yours!

Christina--I read Anna Karenina in high school, but don't remember much of it. I need to read it again...at some point. I hope you enjoy The Troll Garden!

Bellezza--I read Snow last year and enjoyed it. What poetic writing! I need to read something else of his. I, like you, can't claim my favorite book of the year until the year is done...you never know what great books will finish the year off.

L.L.--I'm fascinated by the idea of a musical production of The Dead. Sounds like an experience! I think my favorite story was A Little Cloud.

Teacher/Learner--I'm actually not too sure I'll get to Anna Karenina this next year, but I do need to reread it at some point. I'm glad to own a copy, it's a great feeling to buy a hefty classic that you've already read but don't own.

Brenna--I'm excited about the classics challenge too, I'm really wanting to read The Road NOW, but will keep trying to make myself wait until 2011. I'm looking forward to seeing what books you settle on for the challenge.
