Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Mo

I'm back from a quick weekend holiday, pleased that I got some reading done while I was away, and am in the process of pulling together my final thoughts on Dubliners and Tinkers.  Since I still have no idea what I'll jump into next (something I crave? something for my Fall into Reading Challenge?) I thought I'd go over my options.

Only 6 new books for me in the last month.  I'm really trying to be good and read what I buy before the books get sucked onto my perma-shelf, which naturally slows down the buying speed.  Boy is it hard!  These are the books that I gave into (some just happened to be at the right place at the right time, but I don't think they are complaining.)
Everything Is Illuminated: A Novel
After reading some amazing quotes from Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, I knew I had to check out Jonathan Safran Foer.  Reading the first page of Everything is Illuminated had me hooked--can't wait to read this one!
The Troll Garden and Others
A collection of short stories, the second book published by Willa Cather, and next in my Chronological Cather Challenge.
Gilead: A Novel
Hmm.  Actually have no idea what this one is about, (and I did read the synopsis at some point,) but I generally have good luck with Pulitzers, so when I saw this at my Indie Book Shop, I picked it up and brought it home.
The Handmaid's Tale: A Novel
I haven't read it yet.  That's why.  Shocking, I know.
Q's Legacy
LOVED 84 Charing Cross Road.  Need more Hanff.
A Girl from Yamhill
A memoir by Beverly Cleary?  Who knew?  I'm looking forward to this one.
That's what's fighting for time in the crave pile.  As far as Challenge books, my Fall Into Reading stats have gotten slightly better, but still really need some effort.  I keep getting distracted.  I'm currently 5 out of 14.

COMPLETED:
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake
Wolf Hall
Dubliners
Star of the Sea
Thunderstruck

IN PROGRESS:
Our Mutual Friend (still no progress)
Rooted in Barbarous Soil (still no progress)

STILL WAITING:
PossessionThe Children's Blizzard (P.S.)Paddy's Lament, Ireland 1846-1847: Prelude to HatredHow Green Was My ValleyIndependence Day: Bascombe Trilogy (2)Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a TimeA Room With a View

See, so I should be reading Our Mutual Friend.  And I might.  But I also might dive into Possession.  Time to pile the books around me and see which one is looking the most friendly.

  2. Because of my book-choosing-process? Or because of the selection of books I'm choosing from?

Truth is, I'm just an overambitious, last minute goal setter. It won't be long before the reality of the season starts to set in and most of those books become next year's books. :)

Because of that. I used to read with such a voracious drive. Not anymore. Writing and life in general got in the way. There's something very unliterary in paying bills, vacuuming and washing dishes, but it needs to be done. You ma'am, read for the right reasons and I'm glad I found your site.

  4. Hi Melody~ I recently finished The Handmaid's Tale & would highly recommend it. It's ironic that you also have a book called Gilead (the new U.S.A. in Atwood's book)--are they related? That's quite a selection you have, but I'd vote for The Handmaid's Tale. You won't be able to put it down :)

  5. I'm leaning towards The Handmaid's Tale--read a few pages last night and the writing is great.

Strange connection with Gilead, huh? I don't think there is any relation, although my brain keeps trying to make one.

What I really want to start is Everything is Illuminated, but I'm considering saving that for my book club--it looks like a fun one to make other people read. :)

  6. I loved Girl From Yamhill. I read it years ago, but I remember really enjoying it.

I need to read The Handmaid's Tale... looking forward to seeing how you like it.
